A Red River Area Sportsman’s Club meeting was held at the Wahpeton Community Center from 7:30 to 9:00pm on Thursday June 20, 2019. Greg Braun, Greg Gerou, Cindie VanTassel, Vern Shasky, John Bradley NDWF, Thomas Parkman, Justin Kratz, Mandy Steinberger, Brad Glarum, Dave Langenwalter, and Mary Bostrom. MSC by Cindie and Vern to approve May 16, 2019 minutes.

Reports

Presidents Report (Greg Gerou)

  • John Bradley, NDWF guest
    – 38-40 wildlife/hunting related bills in the last legislative session
    – Individuals from around the state are getting together to discuss No Trespassing reforms, along with multiple state agencies
    – John has been going around to attend various clubs meetings to learn more about their respective programs
  • BaseCamp as website option – John Bradley is involved with this from the NDWF side
  • NDG&F Legislative Update: continued encouragement to contact local legislators with your questions and concerns related to bills
    – Reminder: RRASC will not tell people how they should vote.
  • P.A. System for the Club (Patsy Williamson offer): Greg G and Vern went to visit Patsy – Equipment includes 2 speakers and power head – MSC by Cindie and Brad to move forward with accepting the equipment
    – 800 watt; current generator cannot support this, but Heitkamp Construction does have one that will
    – Need to look into storage options – Patsy recommends a controlled environment
    – Patsy will donate the equipment, but the Club will need to purchase a couple of carts, some wire, etc
    – What to do with existing equipment? Keep as a backup or sell
  • Sale of selected club firearms – MSC by Dave and Vern to conclude the sale at this meeting

Hunters Smoker (Vern Shasky, Becci Truesdell, Rich Truesdell, Curt Mund)

  • Checked into the Wahpeton Events Center, but due to various reasons, including cost, is not being pursued at this time
  • Alternative location suggested at this meeting is the Community Center, with using the south side fire hall’s kitchen, or possibly St Johns kitchen – committee to research options
  • Questions brought up at this meeting included if there should be a ticket limit and pricing change based on where the event is held – committee to discuss

SE Area Sportsman’s Club Committee (Curt Mund, Vern Shasky)

  • No update

Jr. Wildlife Club Committee (Cindie Van Tassel, Rick Tebert, Rich Truesdell)

  • Kangaroo Walk was cancelled
  • Brochures are pending; once ready, the website will be updated
  • July activity = fishing at Mooreton Pond

  • Hunting – no updates

  • Waterfowl Challenge – will go by the number of species harvested

  • Blue Goose Days: Rich and Becci Truesdell took the lead on getting a float in the parade

Mooreton Pond (Brad Glarum, Greg Gerou, Vern Shasky, Rich Truesdell)

  • Piers and docks are in – one will need a new float
  • Richland County Park Board takes care of the bathrooms, so if there is a concern, reach out to them

MN DNR (Cindie Van Tassel)

  • ANS – check your boats!

MN Fishing League (Cindie Van Tassel)

  • Kids are volunteering and getting exposure
Old/New Business
  • Fishing pier signs and locations; will be looking into NDG&F signs if available
  • Recruitment Committee is being established (Rich Truesdell, Abby Heitkamp, Becci Truesdell, Greg Gerou)
  • Bill Dablow at KBMW hosts open mic and has an opening for a weekly guest; 8:20 AM on Wednesdays
    – Suggested that RRASC participate in the open mic
    – Topics could expand from RRASC events to NDG&F, US Wildlife, NWTF, etc.
    – 10-15 min radio spot once a week (Wed at 8:20 AM) for a year
    – No cost to the club
    – Club would create a calendar, and is looking for volunteers to present the topics
  • ND G&F volunteers for ND State Fair in Minot, July 19-27
  • Catfish Tourney – 24 attendees; 2 stations/scales used; 11 lb catfish was caught by one of the youth participants
  • Bowfishing opportunities (Justin Kratz): still looking for bows; will be putting out ad for equipment
  • Breckenridge Family Community Center is looking for grant support of $1000 for summer programs; estimate $2500 for the summer
    – Program includes scavenger hunt, carnival, etc – pizza party at the end of the last session; covering ages 2-13
    – Will occur the last three weeks of July
    – 54 participant spots are reserved over the three weeks; $10 per child; 2PM – 4PM, Mondays through Thursdays
    – RRASC donated $500 – MSC by Brad and Dave
  • Brian Cieszynski submitted request for financial support for three youth attending the National Trap Shoot; funds to be used for travel expenses. RRASC donated $300 ($100 per youth) – MSC by Vern and Brad
