A Red River Area Sportsman’s Club meeting was held at the Wahpeton Community Center from 7:30 to 9:00pm on Thursday May 16, 2019.  Greg Braun, Abby Heitkamp, Greg Gerou, Wayne Beyer, Rich Truesdell, Becci Truesdell, Cindie VanTassel, Vern Shasky, Paul Sinner, Nathan Rausch, and Mary Bostrom.  MSC (W. Beyer & A. Heitkamp) to approve March 21st, 2019 minutes. 


Presidents Report (Greg Gerou) 

  • 2019 May elections results

  • NDG&F Legislative Update: No Trespass Bill did not pass – G&F published a nice write up on the bills that passed or didn’t pass 
  • P.A. System for the Club (Patsy Williamson offer): Patsy would consider donating equipment if there would be something we can use – Greg G and another member(s) to go look at the equipment 
  • Certification of club guns, requirement for HSCTL: if guns are shared, guns need to be certified to be a usable firearm – RRASC has one gun the league could use; Greg recommends we get certified; the gentleman doing the certification will donate the certification 
  • Consider sale of selected firearms: recommend we sell the guns and purchase a gun more sized for the youth or update ones we have in stock – models being considered:

Parks & Recreation (Wayne Beyer) 

  • ND Wildlife Federation: RRASC bought one book of tickets, $100.00 – MSC to approve purchase of tickets (R. Truesdell & M. Bostrom) 
  • Youth hunt approved for $2,000.00 by G&F 

Secretary Report (Abby Heitkamp / Mary Bostrom) 

  • SharePoint: An online data storage for board members 
  • John Bradley from NDWF is working on one and will share with us 

SE Area Sportsman’s Club Committee (Curt Mund, Vern Shasky) 

  • Winter deer population: good 
  • Pheasant population: good
  • Winter kill on lakes: locally impacted Grass Lake and Miran Lake 

Jr. Wildlife Club Committee (Cindie Van Tassel, Rick Tebert, Rich Truesdell) 

  • May 16th, planted marigolds for pollinators at Nature Center at the zoo with Joann Ziggle, 14 kids attended 
  • Committee planning to meet to discuss plan for next year 

Scholarships Committee (Patrick Brejcha, Rich Truesdell and Vern Shasky)

  • No updates 

Club Contests

  • Hunting – will next be awarded March 2020 
  • Fishing – will next be awarded March 2020 
  • Discussion around whether or not adding waterfowl to the contest; talked about how to include, such as how many different species you have harvested; take pictures 

Public Relations Committee (Rich Truesdell, Joe Keller, Brad Glarum and Cindie Van Tassel) 

  • Blue Goose Days: Rich and Becci Truesdell took the lead on getting a float in the parade

  • No update

  • Updated storage and security system was changed 
  • Family Fishing dates have been updated on the site for virtual registration (20 kids max per night) 

Red River/ANS Committee (Brett Lambrecht, Rich Truesdell and Larry Brunkhorst) 

  • $15,900 bid for south side road 
  • Shea’s Eagle Scout project pending water receding and funding approval 

Bois De Sioux Project 

  • No new updates 

Mooreton Pond (Brad Glarum, Greg Gerou, Vern Shasky, Rich Truesdell) 

  • Need to move gravel and level rock. Need to move dock to east end of the pond. The west end needs floats attached. Group plans to go May 20th at 6:00 PM to put docks in 

MN DNR (Cindie Van Tassel) 

  • 58 deer tested positive for CWD in southeast part of state; 1 farm closed 

MN Fishing League (Cindie Van Tassel) 

  • Started in May in Fergus Falls; approximately 450 students involved 
  • Dates and lakes have been picked 
  • Fundraising started for new students in the league 
Old/New Business 
  • Fishing pier signs and locations; will be looking into NDG&F signs if available 
  • Recruitment Committee is being established (Rich Truesdell, Abby Heitkamp, Becci Truesdell, Greg Gerou) 
  • Bill Dablow at KBMW hosts open mic and has an opening for a weekly guest; 8:20 AM on Wednesdays 
    – Suggested that RRASC participate in the open mic 
    – Topics could expand from RRASC events to NDG&F, US Wildlife, NWTF, etc. 
    – 10-15 min radio spot once a week (Wed at 8:20 AM) for a year 
    – No cost to the club 
    – Club would create a calendar, and is looking for volunteers to present the topics 
  • ND G&F volunteers for ND State Fair in Minot, July 19-27 
  • Bowfishing opportunities (Justin Kratz): new scales purchased 
  • HSCTL Magazine – MSC to approve (R. Truesdell & V. Shasky) 
  • Location for smoker is being researched 
  • Fishing for Life is donating rods and reels for Family Fishing

The next meeting is scheduled at the Wahpeton Community Center on Thursday, June 20th. There was no further discussions and meeting was adjourned.
